Black Ridge Renewable Power

The Black Ridge project (project) is a proposed 800 megawatt (MW) renewable energy development near St. Johns in Apache County, Arizona. The project will include wind turbines and solar generators located on private and state land.

The project is an investment in the future of Apache County, creating new opportunities while continuing the community’s legacy of both ranching and hosting energy plants. Black Ridge will interconnect to the transmission system at the Springerville substation, utilizing existing electrical infrastructure.

Supporting the Local Economy

Black Ridge will make significant contributions to the local economy in the form of employment, tax revenues, and lease payments to private and public landowners, including to the Arizona State Lands Trust.

Partnering with Landowners

The Triple Oak Power team has decades of experience working with ranchers, farmers, and communities to develop renewable energy projects, including in Arizona.

Hear directly from Navajo County rancher Bill Elkins about his experience hosting sustainable energy infrastructure at Rocking Chair Ranch. Elkins was interviewed by Triple Oak Power CEO Jesse Gronner about the lasting benefits for the ranch and investment into Navajo County.

“It pours revenue into the county, equivalent of two super Walmarts,” Elkins said. “The whole experience has been good.”

New Revenue For County Services

  • The Black Ridge renewable project will contribute significantly to the state and local economies.
  • Property taxes directly benefit Apache County and essential local services, like libraries, public health and public safety.
  • Black Ridge is also committed to working with local leaders and stakeholders to ensure additional project contributions directly benefit Apache County services. By committing to direct payments, Black Ridge can ensure new revenue is invested in Apache County, benefitting all residents.

Jobs and Opportunities

  • Black Ridge will create up to 500 construction jobs, as well as 20-22 permanent operations & maintenance jobs. We are committed to working with local partners like the economic development organization REAL AZ to develop job training opportunities that help the county meet its goals of creating new local jobs.
  • The construction of a renewable energy project, expected to last 12-24 months, also generates economic opportunities for area service industries, such as grocery stores, restaurants, and gas stations.

Partnering with Local Landowners

  • Each wind turbine uses an acre or less, which enables landowners to continue grazing livestock around them, preserving their family heritage for the next generation and protecting the county’s tradition of ranching and grazing.
  •  Leasing a portion of land for solar energy generation can help ranchers prioritize other areas of their ranch while collecting new, consistent income. Topsoil is preserved, and at the end of the project’s life, the land can be returned to its current condition and used at the landowner’s discretion.
